Bashley 2 Yate Town 0
Saturday 12th August 2023
Southern League Division One South
Yate Town travelled to the New Forest to take on Bashley, a side that finished just outside the play-offs last season and have strengthened their squad considerably. Yate Town manager, John Rendell, has also been busy during the summer, putting together a squad of young local players with a bit of added experience.
The game started brightly and throughout the match Yate Town found home goalkeeper Ross Casey, Bashley’s Player of the Year last season, in fine form as he produced a number of fine saves to thwart the visitors.
Yate first chance was wasted by Will Sage and the next chance saw his effort blocked by both Casey and home defender Jamie Webber.
With the wind at their back the home side started to press and Aaron Sainsbury made a fine save from Harvey Slade and it was one of Bashley’s new signings, Brett Williams who broke the deadlock who fired home on 28 minutes following a corner.
Kyle Tooze, always a danger to the home defence, broke clear on the left before half time but his astute pass was cut out at the near post. However, just prior to half time Yate had a great chance to equalise when Tooze was brought down in the area by Webster. Kyle Tooze stepped up to take the resultant penalty but Casey produced a fine save, as his afternoon got better and better and it wasn’t long before Casey produced more acrobatics and he flew though the air to tip away Tooze’s long range effort as the second half continued with Yate Town looking for an equaliser.
It was however the home side who went on to score their second goal on 60 minutes when Lowes and Williams combined for Conor Whiteley to smash the ball into the roof of the net.
Kyle Tooze’s afternoon came to an end when he was injured in a goalmouth scramble and needed ten minutes treatment before leaving the pitch with a heavily bandaged head on 70 minutes and new signing Ryan Hillier coming on to make his Yate Town debut.
Despite this setback Yate continued to press forward and Joe Hall forced a double save from Casey before the ball was cleared.
Yate can count themselves unfortunate not to return with a point at least and it is unlikely that they will encounter, each week, an opposing goalkeeper in such fine form.
There were plenty of encouraging signs for John Rendell to dwell on as his new team take on Malvern Town on Wednesday evening at the South West Interiors Stadium, kick-off 7.45pm
Yate Town team: Sainsbury, Freckleton, Lewis Hall (Peck 70), McMillan, Parsons, Mullings, Joe Hall, Sage (Brown), Box, Tooze (Hillier 70), Lewis
Unused subs: Bryne, Ibrahim
Referee: Anthony Cross
Man of the Match: Ewan McMillan (Sponsored by William McMillan)
Ewan made his Southern League debut yesterday and had a very good game. He was well organised and a stalwart at the back, only letting Bashley have a couple of opportunities and it was unfortunate they found the back of the net.
