Match Report

Cribbs 2 Yate Town 1

Duru 21  Croome 51       Hutton 85

This was Yate Town’s first game in four weeks due to all the wet (and cold) weather and it proved a frustrating afternoon for the Bluebells as two defensive errors resulted in a narrow defeat in this local derby.

In the first ever completive match between the two clubs it was the hosts who started strongly with Aaron Sainsbury in the Yate goal tipping an early effort over the cross bar and Cribbs winning two corners. However, it was the visitors who then dominated much of the first half playing controlled passing football but they were up against the best defence in the division and creating meaningful chances proved a real challenge with Ryan Hillier having the best opportunity but he took too long to get away his shot which was eventually blocked. Midway through the half Yate Town won a free kick on the left of the Cribbs penalty area and as the kick was easily blocked the home side broke away swiftly and a poor back pass from Lewis Hall resulted in Cribb’s leading scorer David Duru racing clear and slotting the ball past Aaron Sainsbury. Despite continuing to have most of the possession Yate couldn’t forge a meaningful chance.

Like the first half, Cribbs started strongly after the interval and Yate conceded a second goal on 51 minutes when Bailey Croome was allowed too much space in the penalty area and managed to score from close range. There was now a mountain to climb for the visitors as Cribbs closed all avenues to goal. Yate manager, Darren Mullings, made changes bringing on Finley Bell, Ollie Jenkins and, for his Yate Town debut, Calum English Brown to try to inject some more penetration into the attack and it was English- Brown who shot narrowly over the bar before, with 5 minutes remaining, Callum Hutton pounced on a loose ball in the box and fired home from12 yards to give the Bluebells a lifeline. But Cribbs were not to be denied their victory as they played out the closing minutes successfully.

Packed Defence

Packed defence – no way through for Ewan McMillan and Aaron Parsons at a corner and Milo Murgatroyd in action

For all their good play this young Yate Town side are getting punished for their mistakes and Darren Mullings will be working hard to add some experience and hopefully a proven goal scorer to the squad. The side are not far away from being more than capable of holding their own in this division but points on the board are now vital as the table does not lie come the end of April.
