MATCH PREVIEW – Malvern Town (H)

First Home Game
Main Stand

MALVERN TOWN (H) – Wednesday 16th August, Kick Off 7.45 pm at the South West Interiors Stadium.

Following Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Bashley, in a game when the visitors missed a host of chances and a penalty, Yate Town host newly promoted Malvern Town in their first home Southern League Division One South fixture of the season, on Wednesday evening.

The club are hoping for a good attendance to cheer the Bluebells onto their first win of the season.

Malvern Town have kept most of their successful squad from last season when they won promotion to Step 4 for the first time in their history after being in the Hellenic League Premier Division last season and promoted via the play-offs after finishing in second place. They have, however, added Jordan Annear and Jack Watts, both from Stourbridge Swifts, Alex Bell who has been on the books of Swindon Town, Justin Hall from Hartpury University and Joe Hunt from Evesham United.

They have a dual management team of Lee Hooper and Stephen Cleal and this partnership has brought great success to the Hillsiders, the most northerly based club in our division.

Their pre-season went well and included an impressive 3-1 home win against a young Cheltenham Town X1. They started their competitive fixtures on 5th August when they played Rugby Town in the Extra Preliminary Round of the FA Cup – and what a game it must have been with ten goals and Malvern conceding late in the game with the result finally ending 5-5. The following Tuesday evening saw the teams meet for the replay and it was Rugby Town who came out on top winning the game 2-1 with the Hillsiders again conceding a late goal, in front of a healthy crowd of 468, to end their FA Cup dreams at the first hurdle.

Last Saturday Malvern made their Southern League debut with a 2-2 draw at home to Bideford AFC with forward Jack Watts bagging both their goals.
Home fans who attended Yate Town’s pre-season friendlies will have seen that a group of volunteers has worked hard on the ground and the pitch is in excellent condition.

The club will also be welcoming their match sponsors, The Boundary – The Community Magazine in Yate and Chipping Sodbury.

John Rendell hopes to pick from a near full squad and will hope but Kyle Tooze must be a doubt after a head injury at Bashley and Dan Dempsey will still be out until the end of the month following a clash of heads in Yate’s final pre-season friendly of the season on 5th August at Bristol City.

John Rendell said after the game at Bashley, “There were plenty of positives for sure and it’s important we learn as a team. The lads know where they need to be better and we’ll improve together.”
