Match Preview: Wimborne Town (H)

Yate Town v Wimborne Town
Saturday 17th February 2024 – kick-off 3.00pm

The top two form teams meet at the South West Interiors Stadium on Saturday with League leaders Wimborne Town the visitors with Wimborne having accumulated 23 points from their last nine games and Yate Town 21 points. At the end of October Yate Town lost at Wimborne Town when Harry Baker scored the only goal of the game.
The Bluebells are undefeated in 2024, drawing their first two games, then winning six on the bounce, before drawing their last two games, both away from home to play-off hopefuls Willand Rovers and Evesham United. Since making his goal scoring debut against Larkhall Athletic on 9th January Nick MCootie has scored in seven consecutive games finding the net nine times before drawing his first blank in last Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Evesham.

With no mid-week game, Yate Town manager, Darren Mullings, will be hoping that the forward Calum English-Brown will be fit to play having had to go off during the first half last Saturday and that some of the other walking wounded will have recovered in time. Mullings has been able to select the same starting eleven for the last few games and will be hoping that this option is still open for him.
With the highest crowd in the division (419) when the Bluebells entertained Melksham Town on 3rd February it is hoped that this figure will be exceeded against the league leaders, who are the best supported team in the division, and should have a good away following.

It is hoped that with both Bristol Rovers and Forest Green Rovers away from home this coming Saturday that some of the EFL fans will pop down to the South West Interiors Stadium to help boost the crowd. Please note that EFL season ticket holders can gain admission at a reduced rate by showing their season ticket.

Our opponents:
Wimborne Town, The Magpies, come to the South West Interiors Stadium top of the League and top of the attendance chart, with an average home gate in the league of 647 plus the largest attendance in the division this season when 1229 saw them beat Bashley 4-0 on 29th December.
Wimborne have 47 points from 22 games and have only lost 3 games in the League this season, winning 14 of these games with Harry Baker being their leading goal scorer.
Last Saturday, in front of a crowd of 690, they drew 1-1 at home to Bemerton but had won their 2 previous games, 2-1 at Bristol Manor Farm and 2-0 at Paulton Rovers. However, in the game at Larkhall Athletic on 13th January they were 1-3 down, in stoppage time, when midfielder Jez Bedford suffered a serious injury and the game had to be abandoned, but the result still stands. We all hope that Jez Bedford is well on the road to recovery.
With an impressive new ground and facilities Wimborne Town are a club on the up and will certainly be hoping to be playing in Step 3 next season.
Wimborne Town are managed by Tim Stills who was appointed in October 2022 and made nearly 700 appearances in his 20-year playing career, scoring 219 goals. His clubs included Aldershot Town, Oxford Utd. Stevenage and Torquay Utd at National league and League two, both as a semi-and full-time professional. He was appointed manager of Hamworthy United in October 2019 and guided the Wessex League Premier club to promotion to the Southern League as league champions and FA Vase semi-final in the 2021-22 season.
One of Stills former clubs, Torquay United, visited Wimborne in the Second Qualifying Round of the FA Cup back in September and despite losing 0-3 the hosts had a crowd of over 1800 and Tim Stills and Darren Mullings were former team mates at Torquay United.
