Match Preview

Yate Town v Cinderford Town

Southern League Division One South

Friday 18th April 2025 – kick-off 3.00pm

Be there to support YOUR local club.

Yate Town enter the last 3 games of the season with all to play for as Evesham United and the Bluebells battle it out for top spot with just a goal difference of just one separating the two sides. The club are hoping for a big crowd to support the team in this penultimate home game of the season, with all to play for.

Form Guide:

Cinderford currently sit in 22nd position (bottom) in the league table but with Shaftesbury having been relegated due to failing their ground grading (which they are appealing against) it leaves the door open for Cinderford to finish in 19th pace to avoid relegation and with 4 games to go this is achievable, depending on other results. The team from the Forest of Dean have played 38 league games winning just 8, drawing 7 and losing 23, scoring 51 goals and conceding 84 times (only Helston have conceded more).

Cinderford’s last 8 games have seen them win 3 times, 8-2 at Helston with Alex Bonthron scoring five times, 3-1 at Bashley and 3-0 at home to Bishops Cleeve. A 2-2 draw at Bashley plus loses 0-4 at Tavistock, 0-1 at Thatcham and 0-2 at home to Willand plus last Saturdays 2-3 reversal against Bideford has meant that they have accumulated 10 points from these last 8 games.

A player to watch is Alex Bonthron who has scored 24 goals, including 4 penalties. 31-year-old Bonthron was signed from Welsh League club Cwmbran Celtic in October 2024 and is the League’s second leading goal scorer, just short of Louis Britton, who recently left Bristol Manor Farm for Weston-super-Mare and is on 28 goals. Bonthron has scored 10 goals in the last 8 games.

Recent meetings:

The clubs first played each other during our days in the Glos County League, and have met on a regular basis ever since. Undoubtedly, the most important encounter was the Play-Off Final here at the end of the 2018-19 season. In the Play-off semi-finals, Yate Town had beaten Moneyfields on penalties, whilst Cinderford, who had finished fifth in the table, had travelled to the runners-up, Cirencester Town, and caused an upset. In the Final, played in front of over 1,000 spectators, a double from Ollie Mehew and one from Adam Price earned us a 3-1 win. This victory was even more praiseworthy as only a week or two earlier Cinderford had beaten Yate Town 5-1 in a League match at The Causeway Ground, when Ross Langworthy netted the Bluebells consolation goal. Earlier that season the teams drew 1-1 here with Dave Sims-Burgess on target for Yate Town.

This season the two clubs have met twice already, the first time being on 1st October when the Bluebells visited the Forest of Dean and won 2-0 with goals from Joe Guest and, his first for the club, Bristol Rovers loanee, Ollie Dewsbury (pictured below), whilst in December when Yate visited Cinderford in the GFA Cup it was the hosts who progressed to the next round with a 1-0 win.
