Yate Town entertain fellow Southern League Division One South rivals Tavistock AFC for this Pay What You Want fixture, this being the first reverse fixture that the Bluebells have played in the League this season, following the opening day game of the season that Yate won 1-0 in Devon, thanks to a second half goal from Lucas Tomlinson.

Yate Town manager, Darren Mullings, will hope to have Bristol Rovers loanee, Ollie Dewsbury available after being on Welsh Under 17 duty last weekend plus forward Marlon Jackson who made a late substitute appearance at Didcot. Full back Lewis Hall picked up a hamstring injury last Saturday and is unlikely to be available and Lucas Tomlinson, who also went off with a muscle strain, but it is hoped that he will be fit in time for Saturday. Centre back Ewan McMillan, injured in the game at Tavistock in August, is nearing full fitness and may be in contention for a place in the match day squad.

Our opponents:

Tavistock currently sit in 14th position in the league table having played just eight leagues games, winning three and losing five, but like last week’s opponents for Yate, Didcot Town, Tavistock don’t score many, just eight in eight games and have only conceded ten, four of them being in their recent 1-4 defeat at home to Helston on 8th October. Last Saturday they beat Thatcham Town 2-0 at home with their first goal being scored by the prolific Liam Prynn.

Tavistock are one of just three teams still in the FA Trophy from the Southern League Division One South (the other two being Yate Town and Bristol Manor Farm) and they have been fortunate to be drawn at home in all rounds beating Larkhall Athletic 3-2, North Leigh 3-0 and Horndean 3-1. In the FA Cup they lost, at home, 0-1 to Winchester in the First Qualifying Round and, if my records are right, Tuesday’s nights game at Bishops Cleeve (which Tavistock lost 0-3) was their first time on the road since

August Bank Holiday Monday when they won 2-0 at Bideford. In the First Round of the FA Trophy, Tavistock are home to Winchester next Saturday, the team who knocked them out of the FA Cup.

Key players to watch out for are Liam Prynn, who is a regular goalscorer and Ben Steer, a forward, who was signed from Exmouth Town in the summer and scored a wonderful goal against Yate Town when Exmouth were the visitors last season, with the Bluebells winning that game 4-1.

The vastly experienced Ben Adlesbury, who was in the same side as Ross Stearn at Bath City for a while, will also be in the Tavistock sqaud, having signed earlier in the season.

Previous meetings

Tavistock, having come up from the Western League in season 2022/2023, a season, in which Yate Town played in the Southern League Premier Division South and were relegated at the end of that season, so the teams didn’t meet until last season when they played each other three times. Honours were even with one win, one draw and one defeat each. The teams met firstly in September in the FA Trophy when Tavistock scored two late goals from Owen Pritchard and Jacob Bowker to go through to the next round. In the League games the Bluebells won 5-1 here at Lodge Road on a Tuesday evening in January with the Bluebells goals being scored by Oli Jenkins, Nick McCootie 2, James Taylor and Calum English-Bown, with a late consolation goal by Alex Battle for the visitors. The final game of the season saw the teams meet again on 27th August when the they drew 1-1, with James Taylor’s late goal (pictured below) cancelling out Liam Prynn’s strike just before the hour mark.

And the fixture list started this season with the same fixture that ended last season and on 10th August the teams met again in Devon, with Yate Town winning this game with a Lucas Tomlinson goal in the 58th minute, on a very wet afternoon.
