Match Preview: Yate Town v Westbury United

Yate Town v Westbury United

Southern League Division One South

Saturday 9th November 2024 – kick-off 3.00pm

Be there to support YOUR local club.

Yate Town entertain Westbury United, the start of a sequence of four home games in the next couple of weeks. Following on from a fine win at Falmouth last Saturday, the squad have had the luxury of no midweek fixture as they prepare for this game.

Yate Town manager, Darren Mullings, will be hoping that this time has allowed certain players to recover from knocks and that he will have more fit players available for Saturday’s game than he did for the trip to Cornwall.

The club will be holding a bucket collection for the Royal British Legion at half-time and a bugler will play “The Last Post” before kick-off.

All present and former service personnel will be allowed free entry to the game by showing the correct identification at the turnstiles, as the club shows its respect at this time of year.

Form Guide:

Following Westbury 17th position finish last season, they currently sit in 19th position with 12 points from 11 games, but have a couple of games in hand over the teams around them. They have won 3, drawn 3 and lost 5 games, having scored 15 but conceded 17 goals. Westbury gained an impressive 1-0 win against Bishops Cleeve last Saturday with Josh Jenkins scoring an early penalty but both teams had a player sent off with Westbury’s Ryan Bole getting his marching orders. Westbury did have the chance to extend their lead but Bevan Cross had his penalty saved.

In the league, their previous results saw 2-2 draws at home to Bashley and Bideford but they lost away games at Evesham, Cinderford and Didcot prior to that.

The highlight of their season so far was a stunning 3-1 win against AFC Totton in the FA Cup at the end of August in the First Qualifying Round having previously beaten Hamble and AFC Porchester in the Preliminary Rounds before going out to Plymouth Parkway in the Second Qualifying Round 3-4.

Previous meetings:

This is Westbury United’s second visit for a Southern League match to the South West Interiors Stadium, but they also did visit to play a pre-season friendly back at the end of July, with the Bluebells winning this game 3-1 with goals from Stan Wyatt and a couple from Lucas Tomlinson after Westbury had taken an early lead.

In last season’s league games, the side from Wiltshire came to visit on 16th September with this being Darren Mulling’s first game in charge following the departure of John Rendell, and he started with a 2-1 win. Callum Demkiv’s scored in the first half after his penalty was saved by Aaron Sainsbury but he buried the rebound. Aaron Parsons equalised just before half time and Demkiv then missed a second penalty before Joe O’Loughlin scored the winner, after coming off the bench.

Action from last season’s game at the South West Interiors Stadium as Yate goalkeeper Aaron Sainsbury punches clear.

In the return game, on Good Friday, the Bluebells won 2-0 with late first half goals from James Taylor and Dylan Lewis, with Chris Lines crashing a free kick against the crossbar in the second half.
