Match Preview: Yate Town v Willand Rovers

Yate Town v Willand Rovers

Saturday 6th April 2024 – kick-off 3.00pm

Following a successful Easter period, when Yate Town took maximum points, the Bluebells take on Willand Rovers on Saturday, and will be looking to secure a possible play-off spot come the end of the season in just 3 weeks.

Yate Town manager, Darren Mullings, was pleased with the performances over Easter and is also glad to report that he can choose from a fully fit squad for Saturday’s game.

Sitting in sixth position, just one spot off a play-off place, but with some teams below them having games in hand, the club will be looking for another 300 plus attendance to support the team with just 4 games to go to complete the season – and after Saturday two away – at Larkhall and Tavistock – and the final home game against Cribbs on 20th April.

Our opponents:

Willand Rovers are based just outside Exeter and are managed by David Steele who was formerly assistant manager for 7 years at the club.

Yate Town drew 2-2 at Willand back in February on a wet and windy Wednesday night with Owen Howe, Willand’s leading goal scorer, putting the home side in front before Nick McCootie equalised two minutes later and then putting Yate 2-1 in front on the half hour. In a game when there were a host of missed chances with Ross Edwards scoring the equaliser for Willand on the hour mark in front of 169 fans.

Owen Howe has regularly scored 20 goals a season having previously played for Taunton Town, Weston-super-Mare, Salisbury and Bristol Manor Farm.

Willand Rovers, will be recognising Ryan Guppy’s decade of service with a Testimonial Weekend. It will centre around their home clash with Wimborne Town on Saturday, April 13th with a Race Night taking place in the Clubhouse from 7pm with free entry to all and then a Legends’ Match the following day between Willand’s Western League winning team and a Ryan Guppy XI. There are not many players in this day and age who stay at one club for this length of time and it is good to see his loyalty being rewarded.

Recent form guide

Willand’s form has slipped lately and they must now consider themselves only having an outside chance of reaching the play-offs with 5 games to go in a tightly packed League table. They have found goals hard to score recently and four of there last 6 games have seen them fail to hit the back of the net, the exception being a 3-1 win at Tavistock at the end of February and then once in the 1-2 home defeat against Bristol Manor Farm on Easter Monday. In this period there have been 3 goalless draws at Melksham and at Bishops Cleeve and at home to Frome Town and one defeat, 0-2 at Bashley two weeks ago.

Willand currently sit in 14th place in the Southern League Division One South table with 38 points and 10 wins from 31 games and have 1 game in hand on Yate Town who sit in 6th position on 44 points.

Please try to bring the correct money with you (£2) – or you can also pay by card at the turnstiles.
