Pre-season friendly - Saturday 13th July 2024

Yate Town travelled over the Severn Bridge on Saturday, for their second pre-season friendly, against Welsh League side to play Barry Town United at Jenner Park. Despite dominating large periods of the game, they lost to what could only be described as a very dubious penalty midway through the second half.

With a slightly depleted squad due to minor injuries and unavailability the Bluebells played some good football on the 3G surface. In a quiet opening period, a trialist fired just wide and then Ryan Hillier had good effort blocked. On 27 minutes a low shot from Lucas Tomlinson had the Barry keeper at full stretch as he just manged to turn the ball round the post and six minutes later Lloyd James’ free kick was fractionally off target.

Ryan Hillier’s shot is blocked.

Barry nearly scored six minutes later when from a breakaway one of their trialists shot just over the bar from 20 yards as the home side started to get in to the game more. Three minutes before half time a misdirected throw in from Lewis Hall caused some confusion in the Yate penalty area but the danger was soon averted and a minutes later Smith, the Barry number 9’s flicked effort was just wide.

Yate Town captain, Joe Guest, looking to get another attack in motion.

Yate Town started the second half strongly with Hiller shooting just wide and James Taylor (playing in midfield) went on a dazzling run down the right but his excellent cross evaded everyone and a golden opportunity to score was missed. Following a foul on Ryan Hillier just outside the penalty area the resultant free kick saw Mike Baker’s fierce free kick heading for the top corner bringing an outstanding save from the Barry goalkeeper as he pushed the ball over the bar for a corner.

New signing Lucas Tomlinson in action.

After 54 minutes Barry broke away but James Taylor made a great tackle to snuff out the danger but three minutes later, he was adjudged by the referee to have fouled a Barry trialist in the penalty area and the referee pointed to the penalty spot for a very soft penalty, which was easily dispatched, to put the home side in the lead.

On the hour, and just after, there followed a raft of substitutions by both sides with Ryan Hiller, Ewan McMillan, James Taylor and the trialist being replaced by two trailists, Dylan Lewis and Wayne Nderemani.

After 68 minutes Barry hit the post following a goalmouth scramble and two minutes later Wayne Nderemani’s shot from the left went inches wide. Will Christopher fired just wide, and Dylan Lewis had a shot blocked (see below) as Yate finished strongly but were unable to find the equaliser.

This was a good workout for Yate Town and they now travel to Bridgwater Town on Tuesday evening for a hastily re-arranged friendly following the management team at Corsham Town leaving the club on Friday.
