Saturday 24th August 2024
Southern League Division One South

Yate Town made it three wins out of three in the League with this hard-fought win, scoring the deciding goal late in the game to move up into second place in the table, only being denied top place on goal difference.

Yate Town manager, Darren Mullings, had to make changes from the side that won at Kidlington the previous week in the FA Cup with Dan Dempsey being unavailable and Ross Staley joining those on the injured list. Lewis Hall retuned to defence and James Byrne made his first start of the season coming in at full back.

After Bashley missed a great chance to take the lead early on it was Yate Town who went in front after 10 minutes. Lucas Tomlinson was fouled on the right and Lloyd James’ free kick was punched away by Bashley goalkeeper Mack Allen under pressure from Marlon Jackson. The ball fell to Will Larvin who crashed the ball home for his first goal for the club.

Jackson then shot just wide from a narrow angle and was then denied by Allen (pictured below) and following a free kick taken by James, the ball was partially cleared by the home defence and James Taylor’s fierce shot was the deflected for a corner and later Jackson was denied by Allen (pictured below).

For the second week running Will Christopher had a goal disallowed with the referee saying that there had been an infringement just before Christopher’s shot found the back of the net.

Aaron Sainsbury was finally called into action to save well, low down to his left, but the half finished with no more clear-cut chances.

The second half saw Bashley starting brightly and Aaron Sainsbury was called into action and made a particularly good save from Lewis Waterfield whilst at the other end Mack Allen made an excellent save from Lucas Tomlinson but after 59 minutes, when the visiting defence failed to clear the ball, Conor Whiteley took his chance and gleefully slotted the ball home to draw the sides level.

Joe Guest had a good chance to put the Bluebells in front when he fired in from an angle but Allen made a comfortable save and both managers decided to make changes as they looked for the winner.

Darren Mullings brought on Oli Jenkins for James Taylor with Will Christopher moving to full back and Ryan Hillier came on for Stan Wyatt.

Allen then saved well from Tomlinson and later from Jackson but when he went to clear the ball it hit one of his defenders and spun towards goal and despite appeals that the ball had crossed the line the referee waved play on.

Bashley, who had earlier had a goal disallowed for offside, appealed for a penalty when Conor Whiteley was challenged in the area by Will Christopher, but the referee waved aside any appeals and in the subsequent exchange of views Whiteley was sent off.

With the clock ticking towards full time, and the hosts still threatening at times, Ryan Hillier produced a bit of magic on the left as he wriggled past a defender on the by-line and crossed for Lucas Tomlinson to score his fifth goal of the season and secure the points for the Bluebells.

In a game where there were a number of bookings for both sides, Yate Town showed that they can compete for the full duration of the game and their fitness levels helped them to put pressure on the home goal towards the end of the match and secure a late winner in a highly competitive game.
