Pre-season friendly - Tuesday 16th July 2024
Yate Town suffered their second successive 0-1 reverse in this pre-season friendly against Western League Premier Division side, Bridgwater United, in a game that saw both goalkeepers rarely brought into action. This friendly gave Yate Town manager, Darren Mullings, the opportunity to look at some trialists plus give the rest of his squad game time and look at patterns of play.
The visitors started brightly, on a sunny evening, and both Lewis Hall and Lucas Tomlinson had shots from just outside the penalty area that only fractionally cleared the crossbar but the rest of the half saw much of the play in midfield as neither side could gain an upper hand and Aaron Sainsbury, along with his counterpart in the home goal only had regulation back passes to deal with.

The second half continued in the same way with defences very much on top but on 63 minutes, from a break away, Aaron Sainsbury saved the first effort but Fran Souza followed up to slot the ball home to give Bridgwater United the lead. Just prior to this, there had been a number of substitutions and in the final 20 minutes Yate Town started to dominate the ball more but created very little, the only effort worthy of note was a tremendous shot from 25 yards from substitute Will Christopher, that was only millimetres over.
Joe Guest put a cross into the Bridgwater United penalty area.
This was a frustrating evening for both the players and manager Darren Mullings and the side will be looking to fine tune certain areas in the remaining pre-season games.
Yate Town travel to play Gloucester City on their 3G pitch on Friday evening for their next pre-season friendly before they entertain Westbury United on Friday 26th July and Tiverton Town on Monday 29th July – both 7.45pm kick-offs.
