Exmouth Town 1-2 Yate Town
Landricombe 90′ Guest 27′ McCootie 30′
Yate travelled to Exmouth on Saturday looking to continue their unbeaten run so far in January and claim their first double of the season, having beaten Exmouth 4-1 at home back in October.
Before the game started, Dan Dempsey failed a fitness test and Darren Mullings had to make his first team change in three games, with Mike Baker coming in to join Ewan McMillan in central defence.
The initial exchanges saw Yate having the first two shots on goal from Calum English-Brown, both of which failed to trouble the Exmouth goalkeeper in making the saves. Then the first major incident, an Exmouth corner and strong appeals for a handball against Nick McCootie which the officials rejected, but this did not stop the Exmouth complaints. When McCootie was fouled on the edge of the Exmouth area minutes later, Morison collected a yellow from the referee.
Shortly after Mike Baker went down after making a tackle, having damaged his hamstring and was replaced by Lewis Hall, which meant another reshuffle to the defence. The changes did not stop Yate, as they continued to look the dominant side, particularly with English-Brown prominent and it was no surprise when the first goal came. Joe Guest played a ball from to the right, which the galloping Jame Byrne managed to cross first time. The Exmouth goalkeeper could only flap at the cross and Guest, who had made a run into the area following his initial pass rose to head home from eight yards.
Within three minutes it was 2-0. Aaron Sainsbury collected a cross and played the ball instantly to English-Brown on half-way, he in-turn played in McCootie on the right of the penalty area and he shot the ball into the far corner. Six minutes later, McCootie was in on goal again following an Exmouth defensive mistake, same position as for his goal, but this time the shot hit the far post and bounced away from the on-rushing Dylan Lewis.
Exmouth’s response became more robust as they fought to get back into the game, and they did fashion one chance from a corner just before the half-time whistle, but this was safely taken by Sainsbury.
The second half saw Yate back in control. Exmouth’s attacking attempts were frustrated by their inability to master the strong wind at their backs as their passes and crosses went frequently astray. English-Brown had the first shot on target this half, again easily fielded by the goalkeeper, but like Exmouth, we found it hard to measure our passes this half as several opportunities were wasted due to over hit through balls. Though Dylan Lewis was released in on goal but under pressure his shot was saved. English-Brown smashed the crossbar when taking a direct free-kick, and Milo Murgatroyd was denied by a goal line clearance as his shot beat the goalkeeper.
Exmouth’s only chances came from Yate’s sloppiness, Sainsbury threw the ball out to an Exmouth player who missed the goal, Guest was caught in possession on the edge of the area, but we had numbers on hand to close it down and then with the final kick of the match Exmouth scored, through Landricombe.
