Gloucester City 1 Yate Town 0
Pre-season friendly - Friday 19th July 2024
Yate Town suffered their third successive away 0-1 reverse in this pre-season friendly at Gloucester City, of a hot summer’s evening, against a side who were relegated from the National League North last season and are favourites to return at the end of their coming Southern League Premier Division South season.
As both teams looked to fine tune their preparations for the next season, in an even first half, on the excellent 3G pitch, both defences were generally in control, with Yate Town’s Lloyd James going closest for the visitors with a fine shot from the edge of the area that was saved comfortably by
Thompson in the home goal, as at the other end, the Yate Town’s defence dealt well with what came their way.
The second half started with the hosts on the front foot and after 50 minutes Gloucester nearly went in front after a slight deflection saw a strong shot go inches past the post but 4 minutes later, a defensive error in the Yate penalty area gifted Gloucester a goal, with Ed Williams slotting home from
10 yards.
Apart from these two instances the Yate Town defence played as a really solid unit, with Ewan McMillan and Dan Dempsey in commanding form, against their higher-level opponents, and although creative in midfield at times, the visitors were unable to test the home goalkeeper to any extent.
Yate Town manager, Darren Mullings, will be hoping that Marlon Jackson and Ross Stearn will be fit to play in the two remaining home friendlies starting with Westbury United next Friday, 26th July, when their fellow Southern League Division South team are the visitors to the South West Interiors Stadium, before Tiverton are the visitors the following Monday, 29th July.
