Yate Town’s second-ever trip to Hanwell Town ended in frustration, as a first-half penalty, two soft goals after the break, and a missed spot-kick of their own saw them leave West London empty-handed.

Yate Town manager Darren Mullings’ injury problems were further compounded with Dayle Grubb unavailable, handing Wil Turner his first start.

The game began with both defences on top, but after just 21 minutes Yate suffered another setback when forward Marlon Jackson was forced off injured and replaced by Bevan Cross, adding to the ever-lengthening casualty list.

Three minutes later Hanwell created the first real opening. Alfie Pendlebury’s strike was blocked by Aaron Sainsbury in the Yate goal, and Jordy Mongoy’s follow-up was cleared off the line as the hosts began to impose themselves. Moments later, Dan Carr’s through ball saw Pendlebury test Sainsbury again, before Elijah Oladunjoye’s long throw led to Bradley Clayton volleying narrowly wide.

The breakthrough came on 34 minutes when Jeffrey Forkuo appeared to pull back Mongoy in the box, and Carr converted the resulting penalty down the middle.

Yate almost levelled just before half-time when Charlie White’s superb cross found Joe Guest, but his header rattled the crossbar.

The second half followed a similar pattern until two quick goals effectively sealed the contest. On 54 minutes Carr’s cross found Mongoy, who slotted home from close range. Three minutes later, a defensive mix-up gifted Pendlebury the chance to pounce on a loose ball and make it 3–0.

Despite the setback, Yate enjoyed plenty of possession in the closing stages. Cross headed just wide from a Lloyd James delivery, and on 80 minutes Guest struck the woodwork for a second time before a goalmouth scramble ended with a disallowed effort for offside.

Deep into stoppage time, Yate were awarded a penalty, but James’ spot-kick was saved by Sam Beasant — son of Dave Beasant, the former Wimbledon goalkeeper who famously denied Liverpool from the spot in the 1988 FA Cup Final.

Yate now have a week to regroup, with hopes of welcoming back some injured players ahead of next Saturday’s home clash with Chertsey Town.
