Yate Town travelled down to Dorset and reacted in the best possible way to last weeks reversal with a resounding performance as they swept aside Shaftesbury and scored four times in a league game for the first time this season, with midfield player, James Byrne getting a hat-trick.

Yate Town manager, Darren Mullings, made a number of changes from the side that lost against Cribbs last Tuesday evening, with Ross Staley coming in at left back and Lewis Hall into the centre of the defence. James Byrne came back into midfield and Will Christopher, Dan Dempsey and Ross Stearn were on the bench

Yate Town got off to a dream start with James Byrne putting the Bluebells in front in the first minute, a and Lucas Tomlinson’s cross from the right was met by Byrne who planted the ball into the back of the net from 8 yards. Lloyd James then had a shot well saved by Shaftesbury goalkeeper Shane Murphy and Shaftesbury responded with their only chance of the half, a half chance that flew well over the bar.

On 19 minutes Lloyd James found himself on the right side of the area and his low cross saw James Byrne put the visitors 2-0 up. With Yate Town dominating possession Ollie Dewsbury shot from distance straight at Murphy and before half time Byrne was denied his hat trick when following a goalmouth scramble the out stretched foot of Murphy diverted the ball away from danger.

But Byrne was eager to add another and 11 minutes into the second half, James Taylor’s quick break down the right saw him pull the ball back for James Byrne to side foot the ball home and complete his hat trick, much to the surprise to the Yate Town supporters, his team mates and maybe James himself.

A good move involving Marlon Jackson who held up the ball well allowed Ollie Dewsbury to shoot for goal but his effort was well saved by Murphy and then following a corner the ball was cleared off the line as Yate Town looked to extend their lead.

Darren Mullings made a number of substitutions following the third goal and in a rare home attack, Aaron Sainsbury was called upon to make a good save and then collect the rebound following a Shaftesbury break away. Yate substitute Theo Jeremy shot wide from the edge of the area but another substitute, Will Christopher added a fourth, when he side footed home from 25 yards into a vacant goal to complete a good evening for the Bluebells, who could have scored more with a little more care at times. This was just the response that Darren Mullings wanted from his players as they head off on Saturday to play a fast-improving Bemerton side.
