Yate Town’s players coming off the bench, for the second Saturday running, scored goals to ensure a dramatic final few minutes in a game where the home side had taken a 2-0 lead.

Yate Town manager, Darren Mullings, made some small changes to the side that started at Tiverton, with new signing James Ollis making his debut, and Chris Zebroski now on the bench. Omar Taylor-Clarke came in for the injured Alex Monks and Corey Evans started in place of Rex Mannings.

Weymouth looked dangerous early on with Reuben Reid just failing to connect with a left wing cross and showed confidence in light of their recent improved results, whilst Euan Pollock shot straight at Aaron Sainsbury in the visitor’s goal.

Yate had less possession but Corey Evans shot just over from the edge of the area and Josh Bennett had a goal disallowed for offside just before the half hour mark.

Weymouth were playing some attractive football and Brandon Goodship’s shot took a slight deflection and went out for a corner off the post. Callum Watts also hit the woodwork when his shot from 15 yards struck the outside of an upright after good work from Reid and a cross from Tom Berarwish was put just wide by Watts.

With half time approaching Aaron Sainsbury made a spectacular save from Goodship and from the resulting right wing corner Kieran Douglas rose to head firmly home to give The Terras the lead.

However, in the remaining time before the interval Corey Evans had a wonderful opportunity to equalise but his slightly deflected shot just cleared the angle of post and bar and despite appeals for a corner, the referee indicated a goal kick.

With a slight change in formation the Bluebells came out determined to get back in to the game and Oli Jenkins and Corey Evans both forced Weymouth goalkeeper, Ben Clark, into action but despite dominating much of the possession the Weymouth defence was well organised and after 65 minutes Yate Town failed to clear a rare Weymouth attack and Brandon Goodship found space and drilled an angled low shot passed Sainsbury to put the hosts 2-0 up.

Darren Mullings then made changes and introduced Lloyd James, Chris Zebroski, Lucas Tomlinson and Rex Mannings in the final quarter of the game and all started to make an impact as Weymouth started to defend deeper and deeper.

James Ollis shoots for goal.

James Ollis’ cross shot was inches wide of a post having been touched by goalkeeper Ben Clark and then a fine cross from Rex Mannings was put wide by Ollis from 6 yards out. Eventually the pressure paid off and from a Lloyd James free kick, just inside the Weymouth half, the ball fell to Lucas Tomlinson whose cross was headed home by Chris Zebroski.

Yate pushed forward and the officials stated that there would be a minimum of 6 minutes additional time but this was extended due to some stoppages in this period and with time running out Yate were awarded a free kick in a similar position to when the first goal was scored. Goalkeeper Aaron Sainsbury went forward and he was able to get his head to Lloyd James’ free kick and Lucas Tomlinson headed the ball goalwards with the ball going in off a post to ignited jubilant celebrations with the players and fans behind the goal.

Lucas Tomlinson, far right, sees his header go passed Ben Clark in the home goal to equalise.

The game restarted and the referee blew full time seconds later enabling the Bluebells to share the points with their hosts in a game that keeps them out of the bottom four and gives them continued belief and confidence as they move on with their fixtures, having gained 4 out of 6 points from the last two away games and scored five goals in the process, much to the delight of the large group of travelling supporters.

The players and travelling fans celebrate the draw.
