FA Trophy Second Round
Saturday 16th November 2024
Yate Town’s controlled and disciplined performance was undone by two uncharacteristic mistakes in the final 20 minutes of the game which saw their FA Trophy come to end for this season. Yate matched their higher opposition opponents for much of the match and can count themselves unfortunate not to take the game to penalties but Hampton took full advantage of these errors to go through to the next round.
Following last Tuesday’s game against Mousehole, Yate Town manager, Darren Mullings, brought back Lewis Hall into defence in place of the cup tied Charlie White and Ross Stearn and Ollie Dewsbury started in place of Stan Wyatt and the injured Lucas Tomlinson.
After Ollie Dewsbury make a fine break down the left in the opening minutes the ever-dangerous Alex Wall was fouled and the resultant free kick hit the Yate Town wall. James Taylor was a constant threat down the right but it was Hampton who created a half chance through Wall, who was driven wide when partially clear and the Jake Grey brought a good save from Aaron Sainsbury in the Yate goal. A left wing cross from Kristian Campbell resulted in Sainsbury making an excellent save from Wall’s header and James Roberts shot straight at Sainsbury and then just wide on the stroke of half-time. Yate Town did pose threats to the visitor’s defence and James Bryne and Ross Stearn were involved in flowing move before the Hampton defence cleared the danger. Dewsbury was fouled by Archie Taylor but the free kick was cleared and then Dewsbury fired over from the edge of the area.

The second half was more open and Ollie Dewsbury had an excellent chance when he found himself in space in the Hampton penalty area but elected to pass the ball rather than shoot and the opportunity was gone.

Sainsbury then made a great save from an Alex Wall shot and Jack Taylor shot wide but it appeared that Yate Town, with their well organised defence and always being capable of an incisive counter attack would take the game to penalties but games can often be decided in a moment and a right wing cross from Jack Taylor, who minutes earlier was lucky not to get a second yellow for a foul on Dewsbury, led to James Byrne heading the ball past Sainsbury to put Hampton in the lead after 73 minutes. This was harsh on the Bluebells but Yate responded and from a Stan Wyatt cross Marlon Jackson went close with his near post effort which was blocked for a corner but two minutes later, Aaron Sainsbury, trying to be constructive and play the ball out from the back was quickly closed down and as the ball bobbled, he was robbed by Mauro Vilhete who gleefully rolled the ball into an empty net.
Joe Guest brought a flying save from Kai Crampton in the Hampton goal with a superb 30-yard volley and Ryan Hillier was just beaten to the ball by Crampton (pictured below) but it was the National League South side who made it through to the next round of the FA Trophy but Yate Town can be more than proud of their performance against a side two levels above them.
