Bluebells undefeated run ends

Yate Town’s 10 match unbeaten run came to an end as Wimborne Town maintained their place at the top of the table and the Bluebells lost for the first time in 2024.

Yate Town manager Darren Mullings was forced to make a change to his settled side of recent games with Calum English-Brown still injured following knocks in the games at Willand and Evesham United. Mullings brought in Lewis Hall as he was forced to change the shape of the side.

After an even opening half hour in which Yate Town captain Joe Guest went close with a header and Dylan Lewis forced a save from Ross Flitney, it was two quick fire goals just after the half hour that won the game.

A Matt Neale free kick on the right, swung in with his left foot, was headed home by Jack Lovell in the 31st minute and three minutes later following a mistake in the Yate Town defence Matt Burrows found himself clear and he slotted the ball past Aaron Sainsbury.

Yate brought on Mike Baker in place of Hall at the start of the second half as the first chance of the second period fell to Wimborne with Burrows firing wide.

Wimborne were content to sit back and hang on to their lead but Yate responded with Dylan Lewis being fouled on the edge of the penalty area after 63 minutes and Nick McCootie’s free-kick brought a fine save from Flitney who clung onto the ball at full stretch, down to his left to make an excellent save.

Substitute Jack Ball headed wide following a Dylan Lewis free kick but chances were at a premium as the Wimborne defence, well marshalled by Sam Jackson, stood firm.

This was a game that was turned on its head with the two quick goals by the visitors and they showed clearly why they are top of the table in a game that Yate Town could not replicate their fine recent form.
