Yate Town go top of the table

Second placed Yate Town hosted third placed Exmouth Town with the Bluebells coming out on top with a fine second half goal from Marlon Jackson to secure all three points in front of an excellent Bank Holiday crowd of 667 and move them to the top of the table.
Following the 2-1 win at Bashley on Saturday Yate Town manager, Darren Mullings, brought back Dan Dempsey into the defence with both James Taylor and Lewis Hall on the bench and Oli Jenkins making his first start of the season.

Yate Town started on the front foot and after 5 minutes Lucas Tomlinson shot over followed by Oli Jenkins shooting straight at visiting goalkeeper, Frankie Phillips, who had an excellent game in the visitor’s goal.

As Yate continued to dominate possession they came up against a solid and well organised defence but after 22 minutes, fine work by Marlon Jackson down the right saw his cross evade everyone and shortly afterwards a good run by Jenkins saw him cross and Marlon Jackson fired just wide from 10 yards. Another attacked down the right saw Jenkins cross met by Stan Wyatt at the far post but his
header came back off the woodwork. Tomlinson went close before the interval and a Joe Guest header was saved by Phillips who again showed excellent handling after James Byrne won a corner which he dealt with confidently under pressure.

Apart from a couple of free kicks that were put into the Yate Town penalty area and cleared comfortably, Exmouth were content to sit back and soak up the pressure as the home side played controlled and patient football looking for an opening.

The second half started in similar fashion and a cross from Lucas Tomlinson was slightly behind Marlon Jackson and although keeping possession he was unable to test Phillips but, as Yate continued to dominate, the breakthrough that they had been looking for came after 58 minutes when Tomlinson crossed from the left and Marlon Jackson scored with a fine header. Marlon Jackson’s header put Yate Town into the lead.

Jackson had a good chance increase the lead when Phillips made his only error of the game when he tried to collect the ball right on the edge of the penalty area and Jackson nipped in but his shot was just wide of the post.

Both managers made a couple of substitutions just after the hour with James Taylor coming on for Will Christopher and Wayne Nderemani for James Byrne for the hosts.

Tomlinson then brought a fine save from Phillips who was at full stretch to save his shot from 25 yards down by his right-hand post and after Hillier came on for Oli Jenkins and tested Phillips from 25 yards.

Yate Town goalkeeper made a comfortable save from Levi Landricombe but this was the only effort that Exmouth could muster as they looked to try to get back into the game but the home defence was well in command and in the final minutes Tomlinson nearly set up Jackson following a breakaway and Wayne Nderemani fired in an excellent shot from 20 yards that just flew past the post.

This was an outstanding performance by Yate Town against a very good Exmouth side who, like their hosts, wanted to play football in the right way. Lloyd James showed all his experience in midfield and Darren Mullings has put together a side that has shown, in this early part of the season, that it can be challenging at the top end of the table.

With four wins in four League games Yate travel to Southern League Premier Division South side Hungerford Town on Saturday for what will be a challenging FA Cup game but which they will go to with confidence.
