Yate Town 4 Melksham Town 1
McCootie 6, English-Brown 26, Bell 62, Jenkins 75 Graham 35
Yate Town’s outstanding form of 2024 continued on Saturday when they defeated Melksham Town 4-1 at the South West Interiors Stadium to make it six wins on the trot.
This sequence of eight games since New Year’s Day started with two draws and the Bluebells have scored twenty goals, conceding just five.
In front of the second-best home crowd of the season, 419, it only took six minutes before in-form striker Nick McCootie put the home side in front following a misplaced pass as the visitors tried to play out from the back. McCootie pounced and rolled the ball into the net from an acute angle.

Melksham’s Mwaruwari fired wide as the visitors tried to respond but they struggled to stem the attacking intent of Yate Town who dominated possession. It was of no surprise that they extended their lead on 26 minutes when Calum-English-Brown went a mazy run and calmly finished to put the home 2-0 in front and English-Brown was unfortunate not to score again when he hit the post from 25 yards in the 30th minute.

It was a surprise when Melksham reduced the arrears when on 35 minutes Ralph Graham scored with a fine header and moments later, they had a penalty appeal which was waved away by the referee.
With two minutes remaining until half-time Yate won a free kick on the edge of the area and English-Brown’s free kick hit the bar. Dyaln Lewis followed up to put the ball in the net but the officials ruled out the goal for offside.
Early in the second half Ralph Graham shot wide from a good position for Melksham but Yate Town continued to play excellent football and a fine move after 62 minutes saw Lewis and McCootie combine for Finley Bell to score from close range.
Nick McCootie had a chance to extend the lead further when he shot wide following a great run by English-Brown who went past three defenders to feed McCootie.
Thompson fired wide for the visitors in a rare attack but following another flowing move by the hosts it was Bell who retuned the compliment from earlier to set up Ollie Jenkins to score Yate Town’s fourth goal with fifteen minutes remaining.
Goal celebration after Ollie Jenkins scores.
The last four home games have seen Yate Town score 16 goals and fans are certainly being entertained by these five-star performances. Yate Town now sit in sixth position after languishing near the bottom of the table earlier.
The next two games for Yate Town are both away from home, against Willand Rovers on Wednesday evening (they have 3 less points and 3 games in hand on the Bluebells) and at Evesham United next Saturday who sit one place above Yate Town, are two points better off and with a game in hand. So, it will be an interesting week ahead for the in-form team in the division.
