Classy Merthyr knock Town out of the FA Cup
Merthyr 5 Yate Town 1
Goals: Mehew 2, Rees, Evans, Handley | Tooze
Yate Town travelled to Wales for this First Qualifying Round FA Cup tie more in hope than expectation with their opponents having won their opening six League games and scoring 19 goals in the process.
Yate Town manager John Rendell brought back Kyle Tooze in place of Dylan Lewis, this being the only change from the draw at Bristol Manor Farm on Bank Holiday Monday.
On a warm and sunny afternoon, on an excellent 3G pitch, the Bluebells got off to the worst possible start when former Yate Town player Ollie Mehew headed the home side in front after only 90 seconds following a left wing cross and then on 13 minutes Evans added a second with a shot from the edge of the area.
Another former Yate player Ricardo Rees added a third after 22 minutes after Aaron Sainsbury had saved well to block the first shot – and the game as a contest was over. Thomas Handley added a fourth before half time but despite this Yate applied some late first half pressure on the home goal winning a few free kicks but nothing came of these.
A double substitution at half time with Chris Peck and Dan Dempsey being replaced by Dylan Lewis and Joe Hall injected more life into the Yate attack and on a positive note the Bluebells dominated periods of the second half but Aaron Sainsbury was still kept busy at times making a number of good saves as Merthyr were always dangerous on the break.
Dylan Lewis had a great chance to reduce the arrears but after rounding home goalkeeper, Jaimie Cogman, his shot was spectacularly cleared off the line. Near the end of the game following another Yate corner, Merthyr broke away and it was Mehew who added the fifth goal for the home side, his second of the game.
However, it was Yate Town who scored last, thoroughly deserving their consolation goal by Kyle Tooze (picture) as he made space for himself in the Merthyr penalty area and fired home a powerful shot.
This was a tough game for the visitors who will not come up against opposition like Merthyr every week in their league matches.
It’s Cup action again next week as Yate Town take on fellow Southern League Division One South side Tavistock AFC in the FA Trophy at Lodge Road on Saturday.
