Yate Town 2-3 Malvern Town – Match Report

Darren Mullings vs Malvern

Yate Town 2 Malvern Town 3

Southern League Division One South

Wednesday 16th August

Yate Town’s first home game this season, under the lights, produced an exciting second half after a rather lack-lustre performance by the home side in the first 45 minutes. Manager John Rendell made two changes from the team defeated 2-0 at Bashley on the opening day of the season bringing in Ryan Hillier in place of the injured Kyle Tooze and Chris Peck for Will Sage.

The visitors, making their first appearance at Lodge Road, raced into a 3-0 half time lead with goals from Joseph Davies after 4 minutes followed by Harry Clarke on 35 minutes and Jordan Annear three minutes before the interval

However, the second half was a totally different affair with the home side responding to the task in hand and started to lay siege on the visitor’s goal. On 52 minutes Malvern defender Chris Smith handled on the line and was sent off but George Box stepped up to take the penalty and his low shot was brilliantly saved by Keiron Blackburn in the visitor’s goal. Shortly afterwards Dylan Lewis curled a magnificent shot from 25 yards into the top corner to put Yate back in the game but another Malvern player was sent off when Lewis Platt was dismissed for a second bookable offence. Despite constant pressure and cheered on by much of the 382 crowd, and with nine men Malvern packing their penalty area Yate could not break through again until two minutes into injury time when substitute Sam Pashen reduced the arrears further with a 20-yard shot. Darren Mullings then went close with a header following a corner, but it was not enough to earn Yate Town a point.

Yate Town now head up the M4 motorway on Saturday for their FA Cup Preliminary Round tie against Holyport FC from the Combined Counties League Premier Division North.
