Yate Town sign experienced midfielder Lloyd James

Yate Town are delighted to announce that they have secured the services for the coming season of experienced midfielder Lloyd James who has played over 350 Football League games.

The 36-year-old and former Welsh Under 21 international left Taunton Town at the end of last season after helping them gain promotion from the Southern League Premier South, whilst on loan from Bath City and then spending the next 2 seasons there playing in the National League South for the Somerset club, playing 43 times last season and scoring one goal.

Lloyd was part of Southampton youth set up and played in the FA Youth Cup Final in 2005 losing to Ipswich Town over two legs and also made his debut for the Welsh Under 17 side in the same year and went on to play for the Under 19s and Under 21s representing his country a total of 22 times.

In five seasons he made 71 appearances for the Saints scoring two goals before moving on the play for Colchester United (making 51 appearances and scoring once), Leyton Orient (spending 4 seasons with the east London club making 108 appearances and scoring 8 times), Exeter City (spending 2 seasons there making 83 appearances and scoring 3 goals) and Forest Green Rovers where he made 35 appearances.

Lloyd signed for Bath City in February 2020, just before Covid struck and his opportunities were limited and he signed for Taunton Town on loan in December 2021.

On signing for Yate Lloyd said, ”I am really excited to get started and work with the manager I’ve seen over the past few months and the impact that he has made both on and off the pitch. It’s an exciting time to be part of Yate Town FC and hopefully I can add to what I am sure is going to be ups and downs through the season but hopefully we can have more ups than downs and want to be pushing at the top of the table and keep the fans entertained so that they are coming through the gate in large numbers and we have a successful season together.”

Whilst Darren Mullings enthused, “Lloyd is another fantastic signing for the club. I am really pleased to get this one over the line and there has been a lot of work behind the scenes to get this deal done. Lloyd’s wealth of experience, winning mentality and technical qualities are all attributes that will further strengthen the team.”

Yate Town Chairman, Mark Thorne commented, “We are very excited with this signing, Lloyd brings a wealth of quality and experience with him. Darren’s signings have shown we have all the intentions of building on last season’s performances and hope to finish higher than last season. The squad start pre-season training next week and I can’t wait for the season to start.”
