Over the past few weeks Yate Town FC and Tyndale Primary School have been having meetings and correspondences to make links between the two organisations.
This has culminated in a Yate Town official taking an assembly at the school and twice, groups of children have attended Yate Town matches and been mascots for the afternoon; seeing behind the scenes on a match day, running out with the teams and watching the match whilst also meeting players, match officials and the manager.
This was all part of a scheme linked to “Maths Opportunities at a Football Ground” and a group of Year 6 children came to the South West Interiors Stadium to take part in a host of practical maths activities.
The club produced a number of worksheets and mathematical challenges and with the support of Deputy Head, Eve Kirby, and some staff at the school, all was in place for the maths event.
The children arrived at the ground at 9.30am and there were activities around the layout and size of the pitch, measuring the height of the floodlight pylons and the floodlights using clinometers that the children made at school, work relating to the stand, the number and distribution of the seats and the revenue that could be accumulated whist also looking at the VAT element plus other activities that were started at the ground and further work could be done to complete these at school.
Eve Kirby, the Deputy Head of Tyndale Primary School commented on the links with Yate Town FC by saying, ”I reached out to Yate Town FC as I wanted to strengthen links between our school and the local community. The club did not disappoint. As well as putting on a fantastic Maths workshop for our Year 6 children, giving them the opportunity to practice Maths in the real world, they also visited Tyndale to deliver an assembly, invited the children to multiple Mascot Days and provided the children with free tickets. Thank you!!”
Comments from the children include:
"It was fascinating because I never knew you had to do so much Maths in football. I loved measuring the pitch!" - Zelah
"My favourite bit was measuring the height of the floodlights using our clinometers. It was really hard but I managed it in the end!" - Alfie
Whilst Yate Town Chairman, Mark Thorne, said, ”This is a club community initiative that we have been working on for some time. Bob Chester, head of the fantastic media team at the club, used his past experiences as a school teacher to put together this amazing maths project based around a footballing experience. I was so impressed how the children from Tyndall School engaged with the work set and you could see and feel the excitement as they took part in challenges. I have to be honest I learned a few things too!”
