Yate Town played host to a FA Cup first qualifying round clash with step five outfit Devizes Town. The Bluebells come into the contest after suffering back to back league defeats. The Town beat local rivals Royal Wootton Basset but have struggled on the road so far this season.
It was Devizes Town that had the first chance despite their lack of possession. Dan Demkiv found the back of the net from inside the six yard box but the goal was chalked off for offside.
15 minutes into the first half Yate Town managed to break down the Devizes defence and go 1-0 up. Marcus Day made some space for himself on the edge of the Devizes Town box and unleashed a shot which found the back of the net.
The Bluebells had a flurry of chances 25 minutes into the match. The first came from a corner where Joe Guest’s headed effort was blocked on the line by a Devizes Town defender. The next came from Liam Cartwright whose shot from the edge of the area rattled the bar. Marcus Day was quick to react to the rebound and pounced on an opportunity to double the hosts lead and his tally for the day.
Half-time | Yate Town 2-0 Devizes Town
The second half started even with both sides having a few chances early on. Yate Town would put the Devizes Town keeper to work as Sam Morcom’s freekick from just outside the area was put out for a corner.
The Bluebells continued to control the game and would find the back of the net once again 58 minutes in. Liam Cartwright put a brilliant ball into the box and Rex Mannings nodded the cross to secure the result for Yate Town.
The full time whistle sounded with Yate Town seeing out their 3-0 lead and moving on to the second qualifying round of the FA Cup. Yate Town will find out their opponent in the next round tomorrow at 1pm.
Yate Town Manager Darren Mullings spoke about the performance “I was pleased with parts of the performance. In the first half we were on the front foot and we scored some good goals which was really pleasing. It was really important to score the first goal, especially against a team a couple leagues below us. But it’s the FA Cup and the most important thing is that you win the game and I’m pleased we are through and into the next round.”
