Yate Town White 2 Fry Club 1 - Bristol Combination League Division 4
Yate Town White, competing in Division 4 of the Bristol Combination League, also kicked off their season on Sunday 15th September, hosting Fry Club at Chipping Sodbury School Sports Centre. The game began fairly evenly, with a couple of early chances for both teams, but Fry Club began to take control of the midfield, and Yate were forced to rely on centre-backs Zack Wigginton and Stephen Adeniyi to keep their opponents at bay.
The Bluebells were dangerous on the counter-attack though, and had half-chances to restore parity, but Riley Helliker, Freddie Tizzard and Ethan Matthews weren’t able to capitalise. And the team paid the price half-way through the first-half. The visiting left-back was afforded too much time and space, and slid the ball through to the forward, whose long-range effort sailed into the top corner, leaving goalkeeper Joe Tibbert with absolutely no chance.
Yate began to work their way back into the game, although the visitors did hit the woodwork, but the equaliser came just before the half-time whistle. Yate had sent on winger Kian Bryant after Dom Hodges picked up an uncomfortable injury, and it was Bryant who grabbed the goal. He drove into the box, his initial effort was saved by the goalkeeper, but the ball ran lose, and, not giving up on a lost cause, Bryant retrieved the ball and struck a stunning effort into the net from outside the box. Yate were perhaps a little fortunate to go in level but credit is due to the players for staying in the game.
The second-half was a completely different story. The Bluebells dominated from the off, with Billy Michael, Archie Morrison and sub Preston Fear totally dominating the midfield. Chances began to come and go; Matthews shot high and wide when well-placed, with wingers Tizzard and Bryant proving a threat on almost every attack.
Fry Club were reduced to speculative efforts from distance by a home defence well-marshalled by skipper Kyle Porter, but despite their dominance it was looking like they might not find the goal that their performance deserved, but with just moments left on the clock, Riley Helliker slid an inch- perfect through ball to Matthews, and the striker finished neatly despite the visiting goalkeeper getting a slight touch.

There was still one big moment in the game though. Yate were left looking for an offside that wasn’t given, and the Fry forward had a late chance on goal, but Tibbert made himself big and did brilliantly to smother the effort as his side claimed the three points that their second-half showing merited.
