Yate Town U18 White were undone by a last-minute own goal at Stoke Lane Athletic on Sunday, in a match that was overshadowed by a serious injury to winger Ryan Base.
The young Bluebells started strongly and took a deserved lead with half-an-hour played. A corner was met by striker Stephen Adeniyi, whose effort crashed back off the crossbar, but centre-back Billy Read was on-hand to prod home his first goal for the club.
Yate saw out the remainder of the half with no alarms, and went into the break a goal to the good.
Stoke Lane came out after the break determined to drag themselves back into the match, and equalised around the hour mark, but the game-changing moment came when Ryan Base hit the ground heavily after a challenge. It was immediately clear that it was serious, and he was taken straight to hospital, where it was confirmed that he had snapped his collarbone.
And, in injury time, Stoke Lane grabbed a late winner as a Yate player inadvertently headed past Joe Tibbert in goal to deny the young Bluebells a point.
Yate Town U18 White now have a short break before returning to Bristol U18 Football Combination League action at home to Keynsham Town on Sunday 12th January.
