Yate Town White returned to action after a weekend off with an away game in Congresbury against Swiss Valley Rangers. It’s not often a league game is settled on penalties, but that is precisely what happened, with all three goals scored from the spot.

The opening twenty minutes was an even affair with Yate controlling possession, but the notable chances were Swiss Valley’s. Ten minutes in, the hosts clipped the top of the bar from a long-range effort, but the ball fell behind kindly for the young Bluebells. Yate were also given a let off shortly after following a midfield lapse and a misplaced pass led to a good chance for Swiss Valley, but the shot narrowly slid past Joe Tibbert’s post.

The opening goal came after 23 minutes. A cross from the left caused the Yate defence some difficulty and centre back Stephen Adeniyi handled the ball. The first penalty of the game was duly awarded and put away.

The set-back started to give Yate a few nervous moments and confidence in playing out from the back started to wane, not helped by midfielder Preston Fear needing to come off.

With the rolling substitute rule in force, it was an easy decision to bring on Riley Helliker as a straight swap. The nerves continued and led to fewer passes and too many long balls being attempted which played to the home sides strengths. Five minutes before half time the second penalty of the game was given. This time Swiss Valley attacked on their right and the unfortunate Ryan Base clipped the heels of the winger to give the referee little option. The resulting penalty was well dispatched giving Tibbert no chance and Yate were 2-0 down at the break.

Half-time saw the opportunity to reset and to hold a confidence boosting team-talk. Adeniyi came off replaced by Billy Read at centre-back, and Preston Fear came back on to replace Ethan Matthews. The re-jig saw Kian Bryant as Yate’s No.9 with Riley Helliker moving to left wing. Yate came out for the second half with revived energy, and it paid off immediately. Bryant was fouled within three minutes and another penalty was awarded. Bryant stepped
up to take the spot-kick himself and the deficit was reduced to 2-1.

The goal gave Yate hope and with confidence fully restored, the visitors played very good football for the entire second-half, reducing their hosts to little more than going long with their passing. One brief lapse saw Swiss Valley coming close to extending their lead, but Joe Tibbert was equal to the shot, making a stunning save.

With the game seemingly well under control, Yate switched to a 3-5-2 formation to push for the equaliser and it almost came for Bryant in the last minute, however he could not quite connect with the ball and the Swiss Valley keeper was relieved to hold onto the ball.

The final score ended 2-1, but there were lots for Yate to take from the game and the players knew they deserved to at least come away with a point. Yate Town White face

Yate Town also sent a ‘Yellow’ squad for an away game at Bradley Stoke on Sunday. The squad, made up of Blue and White squad members in need of some minutes and development players produced a dominant display.

They took the lead in the 15th minute, when midfielder George Dedman’s through-ball put Tom Davis away on the right, and the winger made no mistake with a smart finish.

Bradley Stoke had a great chance to equalise in the 35th minute. Their forward tangled with Josh Miles in the box and the referee pointed to the spot, but goalkeeper Matt Crossley produced a truly outstanding save to keep the penalty out, diving full length to his left and tipping the ball around the post.

Jedd Miller doubled his side’s advantage shortly after the start of the second-half, the winger curling a left-footed effort home, before Nasro Baghori sealed the win with a great first time strike from the edge of the box into the top corner after good build-up play, with 24 minutes to go.

Yate saw the game out comfortably, and the match will have provided valuable minutes in the legs of some Blue/White squad members, and an opportunity to impress for some other players. Jack Perry was particularly dominant in midfield, and so was named Man of the Match.
