Match Report: Westbury Park 2-1 Yate Town U18’s Blue

Westbury Park 2 Yate Town Blue 1

Bristol Combination League Division 3

Sunday 17th November 2024

Yate Town U18 Blue lost out to a late winner as they came away empty-handed from Westbury Park in Division 3 of the Bristol Youth Football Combination League on Sunday, despite an improved second-half performance.

Missing injured full-backs Archie Stanton and Logan Briggs, as well as long-term injury victim Cyprian Klawitter and suspended forward Jayden Brown, the young Bluebells got off to quite a bright start, but a big and powerful home team began to take control of the game, and scored with 28 minutes gone. Yate were struggling to keep the ball, although Luis Matthews and Pete Roberts were posing some threat in the wide areas. Yate, though, once again, had Kalel Caswell to thank for keeping them in it, the young goalkeeper making a couple of fine saves, while Westbury Park squandered a great chance to double their advantage, hitting the bar from a penalty.

Yate came out after half-time and really started to grown into the game. Subs Ed Davis and Nasro Baghori were causing problems for the opposition. Skipper Callum Rogers was pushed up-front alongside Freddie Everson, and the Bluebells began to ask some serious questions of the home defence.

And with 17 minutes to go, Yate found the equaliser that their improved second-half display warranted. Callum Rogers picked up a loose ball on the edge of the Westbury Park area and lofted a superb effort into the top corner.

With the visitors now in the ascendency, and with the defence, superbly marshalled by Man of the Match Sam North, looking assured, it seemed that it would be Yate who would find the late winner, but it wasn’t to be. A long punt from the home goalkeeper caught Yate out, the Westbury Park’s striker latched onto it and finished to bag all three points for his team.

Yate Town U18 Blue are back in league action next Sunday, when they host table-toppers Mangotsfield Utd, who they beat 5-3 in the reverse fixture earlier this season.
