Yate Town U18 Blue returned to winning ways with a relatively comfortable 5-2 win against Almondsbury in Division 3 of the Bristol Combination League.

The Young Bluebells almost took the lead in the third minute, as Callum Rogers’ clever ball found advancing left-back Logan Briggs, but his drive was straight at the visiting goalkeeper.

But Yate didn’t have to wait long for the breakthrough. Winger Pete Robert’s clever turn on the right saw him break away from his marker, and his inch-perfect cross was headed home at the far post by captain Rogers with seven minutes played.

Rogers was at his marauding best early-on, and his long-range drive went inches wide with 14 minute on the clock, and his second arrived in the 18th minute. The impressive Kris Olah delivered a cross from the right-hand side and Rogers was again on-hand at the far post, this time half-volleying home.

Pete Roberts, playing against his former club, was causing the visiting defence all sorts of problems, and was rewarded with a goal of his own in the 30th minute. Ollie Barton released Luis Matthews on the left, and his cross was turned home by Roberts to give his side a 3-0 half-time lead.

The second-half began much as the first had ended, although a fierce drive from the Almondsbury winger to hit the side-netting with 51 minutes gone, while at the other end, Luis Matthews’ free-kick fizzed just over. But just after the hour mark, it was four. Rogers was again involved, cleverly juggling the ball before slipping a delightful through-ball to Ed Davis, and the substitute made no mistake with a smart finish.

However, five minutes of madness saw Almondsbury claw their way back into the contest with 20 minutes to go. Goalkeeper Kalel Caswell couldn’t hold onto a free-kick and the visiting striker beat him to the rebound to slot home, and just a minute later the Almondsbury winger was given too much space on the right, but he produced an inviting cross for the striker to head home, leaving Caswell with no chance.

The Bluebells were briefly rattled, but began to take hold of the game again. Matthews’ cross from the left just evaded a queue of white shirts in the box, and Rogers should have completed his hat-trick in the 83rd minute, firing over with the goal at his mercy. But it was Rogers that did put the game to bed in the first minute of injury time, latching onto Man of the Match Kris Olah’s weighted through-ball and dinking home superbly.

Yate Town Blue continue their campaign next Sunday when they made the short journey to Frampton Rangers.
